Market Dynamics
Psoriasis is a chronic, inflammatory skin disorder that affects an estimated 2–3% of the South African population. According to the South African Medical Journal, the condition has a high prevalence among South African adolescents and in Afrikaner patients. As per the demand for treatment for psoriasis, South Africa has made significant progress in the sector. Over the past 5 years, South African authorities have implemented a number of strategies to increase access to psoriasis treatments for patients. This has included launching new products, improving quality of care, increasing public awareness, and providing training for health professionals. In the present, many South African dermatologists have included the use of topical corticosteroids and phototherapy as the main forms of treatment for psoriasis. In addition, combination therapy, such as topical medications and systemic medications, are becoming more common as a means of providing a more comprehensive approach to psoriasis treatment. Recently, immunomodulators such as biologics and monoclonal antibodies have become available in South Africa for the management of psoriasis and are increasingly being prescribed. In terms of technology, light- and laser-based treatments have also emerged as promising treatment options for psoriasis in South Africa.
For instance, excimer laser therapy has been developed to target specific areas and provide immediate relief from psoriasis-related symptoms. Additionally, photodynamic therapy is now used to treat moderate and severe psoriasis cases. Finally, South African researchers are exploring the potential of stem cell therapy in psoriasis management. In essence, stem cell therapy is the injection of healthy stem cells into specific areas of the body to reduce the severity of psoriasis symptoms. While the results of this therapy are still in the early stages, the potential of stem cell therapy to offer a safe and effective psoriasis treatment is encouraging. Given all these factors, it is evident that South Africa is investing time and effort into understanding and improving the treatment of psoriasis. Through the implementation of new strategies, greater access to treatments, and the rise of new technologies, greater promise lies ahead for psoriasis patients in South Africa.
