Mexico Population Health Management Market Outlook

mexico is facing an unprecedented population health management (phm) challenge. the country is currently the 14th most populous nation in the world with an estimated population of 124 million people in 2018.1 hedonism and diet, disproportionately contributing to chronic and lifestyle-related conditions2, are driving a continuing rise in health care demands and costs- a situation compounded by an aging population. the phm market in mexico is estimated to have grown at a cagr of 10.2% between 2013 and 2017, with a projected growth rate of 11.6% by 2032.3 this growth is mainly driven by the increasing prevalence of chronic and lifestyle-related conditions, increased government spending on health care services and the emergence of new technologies and approaches to care. the mexican government has taken a critical step towards strengthening its phm infrastructure by investing in primary care. the majority (94.3%) of mexico’s national health expenditure is dedicated to primary health care,4 and in 2018 the government launched a pilot program aimed at improving access to health care services for vulnerable and geographically isolated populations.5 in addition, the government has embarked upon a shift to greater accountability for the health care system by revising regulations for hospital payment systems and increasing competition amongst providers. this has placed greater emphasis on quality of care outcomes and increased focus on preventive and primary health care services.6 furthermore, mexico has made recent investments in medical technology, such as clinical decision support systems, telemedicine and other digital health tools, in an effort to improve efficiency and effectiveness in patient care.7 this investment is enabling mexico to become a global leader in digital health and providing an opportunity for the country to make better use of its limited resources. the mexican government has also taken steps to develop health information systems (his) that are compliant with international standards. this is an important milestone that will enable the government to better manage the population’s health data, helping to identify trends and gaps in health service delivery.8 phm in mexico is undeniably a growing and competitive market, offering enormous potential both for domestic and international healthcare providers. in order to realise this potential, continued government investment and support for the development of strong primary care teams, data-driven approaches and digital health tools is critical. with this continued support, mexico is likely to become a benchmark for phm in the region.
