Market Dynamics

Australia has seen growth in its anionic surfactants market since 2018, albeit slower than global averages. This can be attributed to a high base of manufacturing activity for household detergents and other surfactant-based applications, such as paint, photographic solutions, and personal care products. Australia is largely self-sufficient in surfactant based products, however import growth rates have been increasing steadily as local producers shift their focus to higher-value added products. That said, exports dollars earned by Australia’s surfactant industry continues to make a positive contribution to the Australian economy and is likely to continue to do so in the near future. The majority of products in Australia’s anionic surfactants market are based on Dioctyl sodium sulfosuccinate (DOSS), while other anionic surfactants such as Sodium Lauryl Ether Sulfate (SLES), sodium Laureth sulfate (SLES) and sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) also receiving growing demand. Increase in consumer awareness regarding the environment, safety and efficacy of products is driving the shift towards biodegradable products based on anionic surfactants as well as green alternatives such as vegetable oil-based surfactants in place of water soluble synthetic surface active agents.

In terms of pricing, due to the availability of various economic, synthetic and eco-friendly alternatives, anionic surfactants are witnessing pricing pressures in the market. This is likely to intensify over the next decade aided by a steady influx of cheap products, driven by demand from contract manufacturers. In terms of growth, Australia’s anionic surfactants market is expected to see moderate growth over the next decade, driven by an increase in demand from new applications such as laundry detergents, cleaning agents, and personal care products. Growth in this sector may be further aided by government incentives that promote sustainable manufacturing practices and creation of products with lesser environmental impact. Overall, Australia’s anionic surfactants market is likely to remain an important part of the Australian manufacturing landscape over the next decade. With a steady growth in demand and increased focus on sustainable production, the industry can be expected to remain viable and see modest growth in the future.
