Competitive Landscape & Porter's Five Forces

Veterinary Animal Vaccines Market — Competitive Analysis

Bargaining Power of Suppliers

The suppliers in the global veterinary/animal vaccines market are veterinary/animal vaccines product manufacturers. There are limited suppliers present in the global veterinary/animal vaccines market. Switching cost of these suppliers is low due to intense competition, and also it varies from product to product. Moreover, suppliers are likely to enter into strategic partnerships with distributors, government organizations, and veterinary hospitals to increase the reach. Due to the eruption of veterinary diseases, a large number of customers are available in the developing market, and several suppliers are there to cater to the needs of the customers which leads to intense competition between the existing suppliers. However, the quality of product plays an important role in the animal health industry as the veterinary/animal vaccines products are used to protect against life-threatening diseases. However, low-quality products are likely to damage the wellbeing of an animal, and it can cause adverse effects. Hence, customers and healthcare service providers are selective about suppliers. Due to this, the overall bargaining power of suppliers in the global veterinary/animal vaccines market is low to medium.

Bargaining Power of Buyers

The bargaining power of buyers is medium to high in the global veterinary/animal vaccines market. The market has a large number of buyers and numerous veterinary/animal vaccines product manufacturing companies to cater to the need of the buyers. However, the veterinary/animal vaccines products are specialized and play an important role in providing immunological protection to the animal, and the buyers of the veterinary/animal vaccines market are moderately inclined towards quality products manufactured by trusted companies. As the products are manufactured for the prevention of specific disease and there are limited substitutes available in the market. Also, most of the buyers are veterinary hospitals and government organizations; they are price sensitive. Moreover, they can exert pressure on the manufacturers due to the low switching cost and intense rivalry in the market, which is responsible for the increased bargaining power of buyers.

Threat of New Entrants

The threat of new entrants is medium to high in the global veterinary/animal vaccines market. Any manufacturing company trying to enter the market is required to accept or abide by the mandatory regulatory standards. However, the budget required for research and development of a product is moderate as compared to other industries. Veterinary/animal vaccines products are specialized and manufactured to be used in a specific disease, and the majority of the customers are using products of well-established brands and they are likely to prefer established brands over new market player due to quality concerns, which does not comfort the new entrants to enter the market easily. However, increasing awareness about veterinary disorders in developing countries and increasing adoption of new technology in healthcare is likely to provide a favorable environment for new entrants.

Threat of Substitutes

The threat of substitutes in the global veterinary/animal vaccines market is low to medium. Veterinary/animal vaccines products are used for protecting against veterinary disorders. There are limited options available in the veterinary/animal vaccines market to serve the need of the customers and which eliminates the threat of substitute. However, the dosage or the number of injections used in the procedure varies from brand to brand. Also, the medium degree of switching cost decreases the threat of substitutes. The overall threat of substitutes in the global veterinary/animal vaccines market is low to medium.

Rivalry

The rivalry in the global veterinary/animal vaccines market is high. The low degree of product differentiation and a large number of customers increases the intensity of rivalry in the market. The market is growing with a prominent growth rate and likely to provide opportunities for major players to expand their geographical boundaries which will initiate cutthroat competition between major players to capture maximum market share in the emerging markets. Major players are trying to develop less expensive products to make these products more affordable in emerging markets. Players are engaged in developing a process to lower their manufacturing and logistics cost to increase profitability and to overcome the competition. Moreover, they are also developing advanced products for differentiating their brand from their competitors.

Veterinary Animal Vaccines Market — Key Findings

Analytical insights on Veterinary Animal Vaccines Market covering market dynamics, competitive landscape, and strategic outlook.

Key Analytical Findings

The Veterinary Animal Vaccines Market market is projected to reach $9.91B by 2025, growing at 6.2% CAGR. The Companion Animal Vaccines segment holds the largest share.

Market Dynamics

The global veterinary/animal vaccines market is expected to witness healthy growth over the forecast period from 2018 to 2025. Factors influencing the market are the rising adoption of companion animals, growing livestock population, and outbreaks of livestock diseases coupled with several advances in technology in veterinary vaccines, and various initiatives by government agencies, animal associations, and prominent market players. On the contrary, high cost incurred on storing these vaccines to ensure potency can limit the growth of this market over the forecast period.

Market Drivers

Livestock animals such as cattle, bison, buffalo, sheep, and goats are vaccinated to protect against pathogens such as rotavirus, E. coli Rhabdoviruses, Avian influenza, Foot-and-mouth disease virus, and Brucella which are responsible for life threatening disorders. According to the United Nations and Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), in November 2011, there were nearly 1.5 billion cows and 1 billion sheep worldwide. In 2016, the global cattle population was around 988.6 million that reached to about 1,001.8 in 2018. Livestock diseases include foot-and-mouth disease, brucellosis, anthrax, Rift Valley fever (RVF), contagious bovine pleuropneumonia, Q fever, and hemorrhagic septicemia. Livestock diseases severely affect animal health and have adverse economic impact on producer incomes, trade, markets, and consumers. Between January and February 2015, Kuwait reported outbreaks of lumpy skin disease (LSD) in dairy cattle in Sulaibiyah, Al Jahrah Governorate. The disease has spread across the Middle East region and the virus responsible for disease was first detected in Israel in 1989. In Asia, South Korea continues to report another livestock disease foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) outbreaks, after initial confirmation in July 2014. Between January and March 2015, 157 outbreaks of serotype O were reported in different counties in pig and cattle farms. Thus, growing livestock population and outbreaks of livestock diseases across Asia-Pacific and the Middle East & Africa would fuel the demand for veterinary vaccines over the forecast period.

Market Opportunities

Several companies dealing with animal health are increasing investments in research and development (R&D) that would create ample opportunities for new market entrants and will transform the animal health sector. In December, the Animal Health Institute member companies invested USD 747.0 million on the discovery and development of new medicines for animals and the maintenance of existing products. Animal health industry is driven by two sectors, namely, pets and livestock. Several investors interested in the animal health space including Syngenta, Monsanto and DuPont have corporate venture arms that represent the largest and most active pool of capital in the industry. There has been an increase in the general interest of investors in the animal health sector. Additionally, several early-stage animal health companies are opting for initial public offering (IPO) approach to raise money for their operations. As demand for higher-quality animal healthcare increases, favorable growth trends are expected to provide some compelling investment opportunities in the near future.

Market Restraints

High cost associated with the storage of vaccines is anticipated to hinder the veterinary vaccines market growth to a certain extent. The costs for storage and maintenance of veterinary vaccines are usually high. On-farm storage of livestock vaccines may be a risk to the efficacy of vaccines. Appropriate storage of vaccines is accomplished with the help of freezers, refrigerators, and vaccine diluents. Vaccines lose their effectiveness in case they are subjected to any fluctuations in the storage environment such as temperature. Veterinary vaccines biodegrade with time during transportation and lose their potency if stored outside of the recommended temperature range. According to the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), in January 2016, more than 35.0% of vaccines lost their potency during the global shipping, as they were stored at temperatures that were either too high or too low.

Strategic Outlook and Future Directions

Near-term growth will likely concentrate in modular bioreactor lines and closed-system media workflows that shorten validation cycles while preserving batch traceability.

Partnerships between CDMOs and instrumentation vendors should accelerate standard datasets for comparability across sites, improving forecasting models used in capacity planning.

Longer horizon, organoid and microphysiological adoption may reshape segment mix; teams that invest early in assay interoperability and cloud QC hooks are better positioned to capture upside without fragmenting their analytics stack.
