Nephrectomy is a surgical procedure performed to remove the kidney or a part of it. Nephrectomy is of two types, namely, radical nephrectomy in which the entire kidney is removed and partial nephrectomy where a part of the kidney or the diseased tissues is removed as a process of the treatment. Most frequently, a nephrectomy is done to treat kidney cancer or to remove a noncancerous tumor during the urological surgery.

The increase in the prevalence of kidney cancer, kidney diseases and injury to the kidney, rising number of laparoscopic nephrectomy procedures, and growing awareness about organ (kidney) transplant are expected to drive the market growth during the forecast period. However, risks and complications associated with nephrectomy surgery and high cost related to the procedure are anticipated to restrain the market growth.

Key Insight

The Nephrectomy Market market is projected to grow at a CAGR of 4.7% from 2016 to 2025.

In addition, the pricing factor also plays an important role in the bargaining power of buyer in the market. The market is characterized by moderate availabilities of substitute products, which holds the buying power at moderate to low.

Threat of New Entrants

The threat of new entrants is moderate to low in the global nephrectomy market. Many medical device manufacturing companies are trying to enter in this market, but the low economies of scale, stringency of government regulations for medical device development and large capital required for the product development hinders the entry of new potential players. But the increasing government support for the healthcare industry supports the new players to enter this market.

Nephrectomy Market — Key Findings

Analytical insights on Nephrectomy Market covering market dynamics, competitive landscape, and strategic outlook.

Key Analytical Findings

The Nephrectomy Market market is projected to reach $8.56B by 2025, growing at 4.7% CAGR. The Laparoscopic Nephrectomy segment holds the largest share.

Market Drivers

Nephrectomy is a surgical procedure performed to remove the kidney or a part of it. Nephrectomy is of two types, namely, radical nephrectomy and partial nephrectomy. In a radical nephrectomy, the entire kidney is removed along with some additional structures such as tubes connected to kidney and bladder, lymph nodes, and other parts, whereas in partial nephrectomy (kidney-sparing) only the diseased tissues are removed from the kidney.

Nephrectomy is done to treat kidney diseases, kidney cancer, as well as injuries related to the kidney. The procedure is also done to remove a healthy kidney from a donor for transplantation.

The major key factors driving the market growth are increasing prevalence of kidney cancer, chronic kidney diseases, and injury, rising number of laparoscopic procedures and increasing awareness about organ (kidney) donation cross the globe.

However, factors such as risks and complications of the nephrectomy surgery and high cost related to the procedure hamper the market growth.

Market Restraints

Along with various treatment applications, the nephrectomy surgery also leads to cause some risk and complications in the person’s body. The post-operative or surgical complication may depend on patients and their medical conditions. The abdominal pain is common after surgery, but if not cured even after medication, it could cause serious problems to the patient’s health. The postoperative complications after the nephrectomy surgery include infection, bleeding (hemorrhage) requiring blood transfusion, post-operative pneumonia, rare allergic reactions to anesthesia, and sometimes death of the patient. In some cases, the nephrectomy surgery may also cause tissue or organ injury, to surrounding tissues and organs including bowel, spleen, vascular structures, liver, gallbladder, and pancreas which may require further surgery to overcome the problem. Such types of issues and risks associated with the nephrectomy surgery may hinder market growth.

Strategic Outlook and Future Directions

Near-term growth will likely concentrate in modular bioreactor lines and closed-system media workflows that shorten validation cycles while preserving batch traceability.

Partnerships between CDMOs and instrumentation vendors should accelerate standard datasets for comparability across sites, improving forecasting models used in capacity planning.

Longer horizon, organoid and microphysiological adoption may reshape segment mix; teams that invest early in assay interoperability and cloud QC hooks are better positioned to capture upside without fragmenting their analytics stack.
