The suppliers in the global amniotic membrane industry are the hospitals and specialty clinics that derive amniotic membrane from the placenta of the fetus. Currently, a moderate number of suppliers are present in the market due to stringent government regulations and high opportunities. Currently, major players are accounting for a significant share of the market. Switching cost of the suppliers is medium because suppliers tend to enter into long-term associations, partnership, and deals with the companies that sell products made using amniotic membranes.

Bargaining Power of Buyers

The bargaining power of the buyers is medium in the global amniotic membrane market due to the presence of a moderate number of providers of amniotic membrane-based products. Also, the market has a large number of buyers comprising hospitals, clinics, ambulatory surgical centers, and other specialty clinics. Also, buyers prefer products manufactured by known brands. However, there are very few big brands present in the market. Because of this, the bargaining power of the buyers is medium.

Threat of New Entrants

The threat of new entrants in the global amniotic membrane market is medium. The market is also characterized by a high degree of brand loyalty where establishing a brand name is difficult for newcomers. Moreover, if a company desires to survive in the market, they have to introduce innovative products for various therapeutic applications and product innovation requires a large amount of investment as well as time. Also, there are very strict government regulations which a company has to follow in the market. However, the presence of huge opportunities in the market has increased the threat of new entrants to the market.

Threat of Substitutes

The threat of substitutes in the global amniotic membrane market is low to medium. Currently, amniotic membranes do not have any direct substitutes. However, stem cell technology can be used in a few of the application areas of amniotic membranes. Hence, the threat of substitutes is low to medium in the amniotic membrane market, due to very less availability of options in the market.

Intense Rivalry

The degree of competition in the global amniotic membrane market is medium. Many companies are present in this market. These players have a moderate degree of product differentiation. They are introducing innovative and more affordable products in the market. These factors slightly increase the rivalry in the amniotic membrane market. Companies involved in amniotic membrane market are trying to acquire new players in the market and merge with major players to survive in the market. Big brands are trying to acquire small players of the market, to create a competitive edge, which is creating a medium level of rivalry in the market.

Amniotic Membrane Market — Key Findings

Analytical insights on Amniotic Membrane Market covering market dynamics, competitive landscape, and strategic outlook.

Key Analytical Findings

The Amniotic Membrane Market market is projected to reach $2.11B by 2023, growing at 11.0% CAGR. The Cryopreservation Amniotic Membrane segment holds the largest share.

Market Dynamics

Amniotic membrane is a combination of tissues and cells which are used for biological dressing and helps in wound healing. It has anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, anti-immunogenic, and anti-fibrotic properties. In the early 1900s, the human placental membrane was used as a skin substitute. The amniotic membrane was first used in ophthalmology in 1940 for the treatment of ocular burn wound. Over the last 25 years, thousands of ocular surgical procedures were carried out with the help of the amniotic membrane to treat various ocular disorders. These are used in various surgical procedures as a biological dressing. These amniotic membranes are used in numerous surgical procedures such as biological bandages for burns, non-healing diabetic and venous ulcers, and repair of the abdominal hernia. The amniotic membrane is also used in eye surgeries as a biological bandage to heal damaged tissues. Over 2 million people worldwide receive treatments with amniotic membrane transplant for eye surgeries. However, factors such as the rising amniotic membrane transplantation and rapid growth in the geriatric population may hamper the growth of the market during the forecast period.

Market Drivers

Amniotic membrane is a biological tissue that is used as a graft for corneal and conjunctival reconstruction in various ocular surface diseases. It possesses anti-scarring and anti-inflammatory properties. The amniotic membrane is also used as a biological patch, bandage, and is also used to treat acute inflammatory disorders. As per the survey carried out by the National Centre for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) in 2016, a total of 771 amniotic membrane surgeries were performed in 2016 at the University Eye Hospital Tübingen. The overall prevalence of eye disease is approximately 14% in the general population. Pterygium is a wing-shaped superficial overgrowth on the ocular surface which is characterized by inflammation and invasion of the corneal surface. Whereas, the pterygium disease is common among adults in the US. A significant increase in amniotic membrane transplantation had been observed from 2001 to 2016. As per the Center of Ophthalmology Report 2016, the mean number of amniotic membrane transplantation was 48 per year. Moreover, increasing efforts by manufacturers on R&D activities to expand the product portfolio to include injections, pre-filled syringes, and medicines to meet the rising demand for amniotic membrane are some of the factors expected to drive the revenue growth of the target market.

Market Opportunities

Developing economies pose an opportunity for various markets as they have undeveloped research and development sectors owing to which they are unable to address upcoming health challenges. Despite huge demand, the African region is dependent on imported medicines and other health technologies. Although there is a high requirement for treatment, poor economic conditions lead to the slow growth of the healthcare industry within the African region. As per the statistics of NCBI in 2016, around 180 patients from West China Hospital who underwent excision of skin lesions treated with the help of amniotic membrane lived in low- and middle-income countries. This huge population affected with the ocular disease in developing countries serves as a strong opportunity for key players operating in the amniotic membrane market.

Market Restraints

Amniotic membrane is used for many years as an adjuvant for tissues healing. Its use has been continued to expand to other fields of orthopedics, urology, gynecology, plastic surgery, dentistry, and wound care. But these are most widely used in ocular surgery. The high cost of amniotic membrane remains one of the major barriers in the successful treatment of ocular diseases. The cost of the treatment increases exponentially with the increasing demand for an amniotic membrane for the treatment of various ocular diseases. The venous ulcers treatment costs even higher than other ocular diseases. Furthermore, healthcare reengineering paradigms that manage increasing co-morbidities such as skin disease, diabetes, and dry eye disease should offer additional potential for cost reductions in the coming years.

Strategic Outlook and Future Directions

Near-term growth will likely concentrate in modular bioreactor lines and closed-system media workflows that shorten validation cycles while preserving batch traceability.

Partnerships between CDMOs and instrumentation vendors should accelerate standard datasets for comparability across sites, improving forecasting models used in capacity planning.

Longer horizon, organoid and microphysiological adoption may reshape segment mix; teams that invest early in assay interoperability and cloud QC hooks are better positioned to capture upside without fragmenting their analytics stack.
