Market Dynamics

The global sodium bicarbonate market is driven by increasing used of sodium bicarbonate in the animal feed sector. The agriculture business is focusing on improving animal raising capacity in response to increased demand for various animal products. The need for animal feed is rising as the dairy, chicken meat, and aquaculture industries grow. As a result, the demand for sodium bicarbonate, which is utilized in animal feed, is growing. The other factor influencing demand in rapid surging demand in the food & beverage industry. Sodium bicarbonate is a widely used multifunctional ingredient in the food and beverage industries. It enhances volume and is used as a leavening agent in bakery products including wafers, crackers, and cakes. It is used in the bread and confectionery industries as a leavening agent, effervescent agent, and pH buffer. Sodium bicarbonate is used in industry as an acid regulator, anticaking agent, raising agent, stabilizer, and thickener.

While the use of sodium bicarbonate in the personal care products industry, is expected to boom market expansion opportunities as sodium bicarbonate is used in a range of personal care products due to the benefits it gives such as abrasiveness, pH management, skin protection, deodorizing qualities, and oral care and hygiene properties. However, the emerging presence of sodium bicarbonate substitutes such as sodium sulphate, calcium carbonate, potassium bicarbonate and others are expected to pose as a restraining factor to the market growth. While the presence of stringent government regulation on the grade type produced especially food grade and pharmaceutical grade and the health hazards related to exposure or consumption of larger amounts of sodium bicarbonate is expected to pose as a challenge to the market growth prospects during the forecast period.

Market Drivers

With rising demand for various animal products, the agriculture industry is concentrating on increasing animal raising capacity. The need for animal feed is increasing as the dairy, chicken meat, and aquaculture sectors expand. This is increasing demand for sodium bicarbonate, which is used in animal feed. Sodium bicarbonate is used in the preparation of nutrition mixtures for poultry, cattle, and aqua products. Sodium bicarbonate is a significant source of sodium for cattle and poultry, and it adds salt to animal feed. Egg consumption is also increasing in several nations. The number of milking cows on dairy farms is growing. The aquaculture business is the main source of raw materials to the seafood industry. Quality animal feed is critical to the tremendous expansion in these businesses. Sodium bicarbonate is a significant addition for improving animal feed nutrition, which is driving growth in the sodium bicarbonate market due to rising demand for animal feed.

Currently, sodium bicarbonate is a significant component of animal diet. Sodium Bicarbonate NaHCO3 or Baking Soda is a chemical molecule having several applications in animal and poultry nutrition. Baking soda is regarded as a safe component for cattle and poultry food in the United States (US), and it is also authorised by the FDA. While sodium bicarbonate has a weak alkali characteristic, it has a proper buffering function and may maintain alkali and acid balance in animals' bodies by preventing rapid pH fluctuations. The use of buffering agents in animal feed is required to limit the detrimental effects of diet acidification, and as a result, buffering chemicals such as sodium bicarbonate are widely used in the feeding of cattle and poultry. In situations of acidosis, metabolic acidosis in cattle, the alkali property of sodium bicarbonate causes alkali and acid balance in the animal, and it can compensate for bicarbonate ion loss and decrease. The buffering property of pure and natural feed grade sodium bicarbonate, which is mostly utilised as a dairy cow feed additive, helps regulate rumen pH by lowering acidic conditions. In poultry feeds, sodium bicarbonate is often used as a partial substitute for salt. Sodium bicarbonate can replace one-third of the salt in chicken diets during the warm seasons. Grill operations have discovered that sodium bicarbonate is an alternate salt supply that aids in litter reduction by delivering drier litter and a healthier living habitat. Baking soda is now utilised in most chicken farms across the world, with an effective dosage of 2 to 3 kg per tonne. In the feed of dairy cattle, bovine baking soda is used as a supply of bicarbonate, and baking soda is utilised as a source of salt without chloride.

With a growing worldwide population and increasing demand for animal products, the need for animal feed is predicted to rise tremendously. According to the International Feed Industry Federation, global commercial feed manufacture generates more than $400 billion in yearly revenue. The European Feed Manufacturers' Federation (FEFAC) stated that in 2021, the EU-27 nations produced 150.2 million tonnes of compound feed for farm animals, up 0.03% from 2020. Symbolizing market expansion, which is likely to fuel demand for sodium bicarbonate in the industry, as it is a crucial buffering agent in the animal feed market.

According to the International Feed Industry Federation's most recent annual report 2020-2021, global feed output in 2020 was 1171.1 million metric tonnes, with an expected increase due to increased demand from the animal cattle industry. According to the United Nations Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO), worldwide consumption of animal proteins is expected to increase by 14% by 2030 compared to the base period average of 2018-2020, owing mostly to income and population growth. Protein availability from beef, hog, poultry, and sheep meat is expected to rise 5.9%, 13.1%, 17.8%, and 15.7% by 2030, respectively. And by 2050, food consumption is forecast to increase by 60%, with animal protein output likely to increase by 1.7% each year between 2010 and 2050, with meat production expected to increase by almost 70%, aquaculture by 90%, and dairy by 55%. This already represents a growth factor of nearly double but extrapolating the growth rates of the previous forty years ahead to 2050 would theoretically quadruple the demands. As a result of the expanding livestock sector, there is a greater need for animal nutrition feed, which is likely to fuel market growth in the global sodium bicarbonate market.

Market Opportunities

The personal care industry continues to see potential increases in market demand for sodium bicarbonate. With new sodium-based products continually being produced in the personal care sector to meet the demands of women, men, and children, the sodium bicarbonate market is projected to thrive in this end use industry throughout the forecast period. Sodium bicarbonate is used in the personal care industry to help in skin cleaning. Furthermore, because sodium bicarbonate may combine with oil and fat, it is used by many hair care product producers. Sodium bicarbonate absorbs moisture and interacts with odour-causing chemicals. As a result, it is employed in natural deodorants. It works as a natural exfoliator, teeth whitener, skin soother, complexion enhancer, scalp clarifier, and odour blocker. Sodium bicarbonate's varied features contribute to the rising demand for sodium bicarbonate in the personal care products market.

Sodium bicarbonate is utilised in a variety of personal care products because of the following benefits it provides:

· Abrasiveness: Removes materials from the body's surface, aids in tooth cleaning, and increases gloss.

· pH regulation: Maintains the pH of cosmetics and skin care products.

· Deodorizing properties: Reduces or conceals undesirable body odors.

· Skin protection: Assists in avoiding the negative effects of external elements on the skin.

· Oral care/hygiene agent: Offers aesthetic effects to the oral cavity (cleaning, deodorization, and protection)

Since it can help neutralise foul, acidic smells, sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) is becoming a more prevalent element in deodorant. Baking soda's deodorizing efficacy stems from its ability to eliminate odours rather than simply masking them with scents. The majority of unpleasant odours are caused by either strong acids (such as sour milk) or strong bases (spoiled fish). Baking soda deodorises by neutralizing both acidic and basic odour molecules, resulting in a more odour-free environment. Baking soda is used in industry to manage odours in sewage treatment facilities, barns, and feedlots. Sodium bicarbonate is found in toothbrush and denture cleansers, bath beads and salts, baby powders, and deodorant powders, mostly for its odour neutralizing abilities. Baking soda may be used as a personal deodorant for the body, as well as a home deodorant on carpets, furniture, and in the refrigerator and freezer. Baking soda is used in industry to manage odours in sewage treatment facilities, barns, and feedlots

Several mouthwashes sold in the market are containing sodium bicarbonate as a component. It has both antiseptic and abrasive qualities. Sodium bicarbonate toothpaste supports a healthy pH balance in the mouth, reduces bad breath, and prevents infections. It cleans the teeth and gums mechanically, neutralises acid production in the mouth, and serves as an antiseptic to help prevent infections. Because of its easy availability, safety, minimum abrasiveness, and antibacterial properties, sodium bicarbonate is a patient-friendly mouthwash, component in dentifrice, or chewing gum that may be used on a long-term basis as an adjunct almost free of adverse effects. Sodium bicarbonate is also an active component in antacids, which are used to treat heartburn and acid reflux. It works by immediately neutralising stomach acid and temporarily alleviating acid reflux symptoms. While making a nasal irrigation solution, sodium bicarbonate can be used as a buffering agent in conjunction with table salt. It is used in the treatment of blepharitis in the eye. Sodium bicarbonate is also an authorised active component in over-the-counter skin protectant and anti-carries medications. Sodium bicarbonate is quite effective in gently peeling and exfoliating skin: cells separate from the skin and pores are cleared. Skin care products are more easily absorbed, and the skin is protected. Therefore, the growing applicability of baking soda in personal care industry products is expected to create an opportunity for the market to expand during forecast period.

Market Restraints

In recent years, there has been a substantial increase in the usage of sodium bicarbonate alternatives as effective and organic alternatives in a variety of end-use sectors. With changing consumer patters and increasing demand for cost effective, safer, and natural ingredients for production is expected to hamper market growth of sodium bicarbonate market globally. The various emerging alternatives being calcareous marine algae used in various industries are, calcium carbonate, calcium chloride, sodium acetate, glycerol, calcareous marine algae, potassium bicarbonate, baker’s yeast and eggs, ammonium bicarbonate, sodium sulphate, Novafeed, and borax.

These alternatives present similar properties in various end use industries hence in case of shortage or supply issues related to sodium bicarbonate, end use customers may rely on alternatives in the market to achieve the desired results. Customers in the food & beverage industry are emphasizing the consumption of nutrient-rich foods in order to increase immunity. Consumption habits have shifted, with a demand for organics or natural sources of items. The availability of natural replacements such as eggs and yeast prove to be an appropriate choice for food sector makers to build clean-label goods, appealing health-conscious consumers. Companies such as Lesaffre International provide an organic assortment of baker's yeast and guarantee excellent long-term performance. Potassium bicarbonate is often chosen by sodium-restricted users. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) of the United States acknowledges potassium bicarbonate as a safe food component and an excellent source of carbon dioxide, and it consequently finds several applications in baking and confectionery items such as cakes, biscuits, muffins, waffles, and doughnuts. In the food grade sector, ammonium bicarbonate can also be used as a replacement.

Calcium carbonate and calcium chloride are used as effective substitutes in the pharmaceutical industry because sodium bicarbonate salt is relatively inexpensive, and excessive consumption of sodium source compounds can lead to kidney disease and high blood pressure, which can lead to heart failure or stroke. As a first-line therapy for heartburn, calcium carbonate is a superior and safer option to sodium bicarbonate. Calcium carbonate is a quick-acting over-the-counter medication. Calcium chloride is a chewable supplement with low negative effects. As a result, such low-cost pharmaceutical grade sodium bicarbonate alternatives are providing a serious challenge to the sodium bicarbonate business. While sodium acetate is a feasible option for serum and urinary alkalinization when sodium bicarbonate is unavailable, it should not be used frequently when sodium bicarbonate is available. Simultaneously, glycerol-based feed and calcareous sea algae have been identified as especially excellent sodium bicarbonate buffering agent alternatives. According to research published in the journal Revista Brasileira de Zootecnia, calcareous marine alga is more effective than sodium bicarbonate in buffering beef cattle, having a good influence on growth performance, feed efficiency, health, and meat quality. Novafeed is a buffer chemical that may efficiently substitute sodium bicarbonate in cow feed without affecting the ration composition. In the poultry business, sodium sulphate is seen as a more cost-effective alternative to sodium bicarbonate for supplying salt in poultry diets, with beneficial effects on dietary electrolyte balance (DEB) and extra advantages on feed and litter quality.

Borax is a more potent alternative to sodium bicarbonate, another popular chemical used as a home cleaning. Since they are alkaline and abrasive, sodium bicarbonate and Borax are both effective. Yet, because borax has a higher PH than sodium bicarbonate, it is a somewhat harsher but potentially more effective cleaning agent. Both are salts, and both are popular as "green" household cleaning solutions, however borax has a pH of 9.5, whilst baking soda has a pH of 8. Hence, the emerging presence of substitutes in the market is expected to act as a restraining factor for the global sodium bicarbonate market.

Market Challenges

Sodium bicarbonate largely classified as non-toxic and considered safe when handled or ingested in reasonable amounts. Yet, like with any chemical, excessive doses of the molecule might be hazardous to one's health. Sodium bicarbonate can induce stomach cramps, gas, upset stomach, vomiting, frequent urination, lack of appetite, and blood in the urine and faeces if consumed in significant doses. A sodium bicarbonate overdose can cause shortness of breath, muscular spasms, mood changes, jerks, and fits. When providing sodium bicarbonate to individuals with renal failure, high blood pressure, heart failure, or kidney stones, extreme caution must be exercised.

Unmanaged sodium bicarbonate exposure can cause various health issues such as include skin, eye, nose, and throat irritation, coughing, chest pain, and gastrointestinal upset. It can induce stomach distention or rupture, as well as systemic alkalosis, edema, and an increase in extracellular fluid volume. Hyperirritability and tetany are symptoms of severe alkalosis. It can induce cerebral edema, which can lead to death. It may also harm the kidneys. When it comes to the environmental impact of sodium bicarbonate, most animals are unaffected, but a high dose of this molecule has been shown to harm reproductive systems in some species. Only when heated to breakdown can sodium bicarbonate generate hazardous gases of carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, and sodium oxides, posing an acute and chronic threat. Another environmental effect associated with sodium carbonate is the mining process for minerals such as nahcolite and trona, which are processed into sodium ash or sodium bicarbonate. Mining baking soda may be hazardous to the environment since it consumes a lot of energy and emits nitrogen oxides, methane, and other pollutants.

Another factor impeding market expansion is the presence of rigorous rules controlling the production process. Rigid standards and certifications for manufacturing and distribution are projected to limit industry development potential. To avoid the development of undesirable surface chemical reactions, the purity, quality, and particle size of various grade kinds of sodium bicarbonate are rigorously controlled in the market. In the case of food grade sodium bicarbonate, rigorous and demanding international food safety standards, such as ISO 22000 (Food Safety Management Systems) and FSSC 22000(Food Safety Certification Scheme), must be followed. While pharmaceutical grade sodium bicarbonate is produced and distributed in accordance with pharmaceutical standards, it is made in an FDA-approved facility under a strict Quality Management system. Manufacturers must get clearance, including Good Industrial Practice, before producing pharmaceutical grade compounds. Therefore, the hazards related to sodium bicarbonate and the stringent regulations in the market can potentially hold back on the market growth prospects of global sodium bicarbonate market.

Strategic Outlook and Future Directions

The pandemic impacted and completely interrupted the production of the sodium bicarbonate, leading to restraint in the supply of sodium bicarbonate in the global market. While the COVID-related supply shortages and resulting chain breakdown were nearly impossible to predict. With stringent government regulations and implementation of lockdown, in various regions throughout 2020-2021, let to a significant impact on availability of sodium bicarbonate in the market. With the implementation of lockdown sodium bicarbonate producers were forced to halt production processes, leading to occurrence of significant losses, and delay in projects or undertakings orders demanding sodium bicarbonate.

Another factor impacted in the supply chain was the availability of raw material supply. With mobility restraints the raw material supply was reduced in the market impacting production prices, disrupting market functioning globally. However, with ease in lockdown restrictions in the second half of 2020 and in the year 2021, companies worked closely with the suppliers to manage the supply of raw materials proactively, to optimize supply capability to satisfy market demand at less-than-optimal production capacity. With supply and distributions systems also being interrupted, and not capable of functioning at complete potential the market saw a restraint in its growth. However, with the slowdown in the spread of the pandemic, and increasing ease of restrictions in various region, in late 2021, and 2022 manufacturers were able to restart production to full capacity to meet the rising demand from various applications of the sodium bicarbonate-based products. With the extensive use of sodium bicarbonate in various end-use industries also in industries that are considered to be essential goods, the producers increasingly focused on ramping up production to meet the ongoing demand. Th e supply is expected to grow back to pre-covid levels gradually, while fulfilling consumer requirements. With the market relatively stabilizing in 2023, as producers starts to realize production at full capacity and expand market production potentials, the market is expected to flourish during the forecast period. With increasingly diverse applications of sodium bicarbonate the market is expected to grow significantly in the near future.

The impact of the pandemic created restrictions on demand for end use industry of sodium bicarbonate was varied in nature. With an extensive range of end use industries of sodium bicarbonate ranging from the food industry, animal feed industry to chemicals and textile industry use, the demand of sodium bicarbonate depended on the significant impact of demand from consumers. The pandemic brought uncertainty in the market, leading to end use industry as well as consumers globally to cut down on consumptions, largely restricting to necessities.

With the initial lockdowns implemented in 2020, all end user industries saw a significant drop in productions due to the implemented restrictions, reducing demand for inputs such as sodium bicarbonate. However, the production rates in industries categorised as essential goods continued to function at less-than-optimal conditions to meet the basic needs for the consumers. Industries such as food & beverages, animal feed, pharmaceuticals & personal care, were categorised as essential products industries and were supported by the government to continue production to meet the basic needs demand in the market. While in the non-essential goods category with the pause in production process the demand for sodium bicarbonate in these markets fell drastically.

However, sodium bicarbonate being an essential component as an input in the manufacturing process of the essential good segment the, the sodium bicarbonate market demand continued to experience a significant rise in demand for food grade, feed grade and pharmaceutical grade sodium bicarbonate market. While the overall demand fell during 2020, with ease in lockdown and partial commencement of end use industry activities in late 2020, to 2021, the demand saw a gradual increase overtime. However, in 2022, with most end use industry resuming activities at full capacity the demand for sodium bicarbonate has increased significantly while supply for same is growing in the market. During the forecast period, with market expansion and increasing use of sodium bicarbonate, the market is expected to grow noticeably.

The plant's yearly capacity is 2.5 million tonnes of soda ash (sodium carbonate, Na2CO3) and 200,000 tonnes of baking soda (sodium bicarbonate, NaHCO3). Dense Soda Ash (sodium carbonate) and Sodium Bicarbonate products, which are used in industries ranging from glass production to baking powder, are delivered to many nations across the world, the majority of which are European.
