SWOT Analysis

Strengths

  • Microchip Technology's products now have a consistent level of quality thanks to automation, which also allows the business to scale up and down in response to market demand.
  • Stringent investment in R&D and innovative technology

Weaknesses

  • The organization's structure only works with the current business model, which prevents it from expanding into related product sectors.
  • More funding is required for emerging technologies. Microchip Technology must invest more in technology to unify the processes across the board given the scope of expansion.

Opportunities

  • The new possibilities will level the playing field for all of the industry's participants. It is a fantastic chance for Microchip Technology to highlight its technological edge and expand its market share in the new product category.

Threats

  • The current supply chain architecture, which is dominated by physical infrastructure, may be threatened by shifting customer purchasing patterns from online channels.

Key Developments

DateApproachDevelopment
December 2022OthersThe movement of computer workloads to the network edge has been significantly aided by mid-range and System-on-Chip (SoC) FPGAs. With its award-winning FPGAs and the first RISC-V-based FPGAs that provide double the power efficiency of rival mid-range FPGAs and boast best-in-class design, operating system, and solutions ecosystem, Microchip Technologies has contributed to this change. During the 2022 RISC-V Summit, the business will display its solutions and sneak peek at its PolarFire 2 FPGA silicon platform, RISC-V-based CPU subsystem, and software suite roadmap.
September 2022CertificationMicrochip Technology continues to certify its products and tools to industry safety specifications and has now added IEC 61508 SIL 3 certification packages for two more of its System-on-Chip (SoC) FPGA and FPGA families. This helps to lower the cost of this process and shorten the time to market for system developers.
August 2022CertificationThe Qualified Manufacturers List (QML) Class Q and Class V standards for spaceflight component reliability are standards that spaceflight system developers frequently agree to meet before designing new components. These standards are MIL-STD-883 Class B qualification and the Q and V standards of the QML. Assembling spaceflight systems that benefit from the RT PolarFire FPGA's superior computing and connectivity throughput, significantly lower power consumption, and immunity to configuration Single Event Upsets (SEUs) compared to SRAM-based FPGAs is now possible thanks to Microchip Technology Inc.'s achievement of the first qualification milestone.
June 2022CertificationMicrochip Technology Inc. announces the production certification for the MPFS250T and the previously announced MPFS025T as customers embrace PolarFire SoC FPGAs quickly. Moreover, Microchip says that its Mi-V ecosystem is facilitating the adoption of RISC-V while opening up a new class of industrial, IoT, and other edge-compute, more compact, cost-effective, and power-efficient solutions.
November 2021OthersThe second development tool in Microchip Technology's Smart Embedded Vision program has been made available to designers using its PolarFire RISC-V System on Chip (SoC) Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA). The PolarFire device is the only mid-range product that simultaneously supports dual 4K video processing and quad-core RISC-V application-class processors running both the Real Time Operating System (RTOS) and rich operating systems like Linux. It is the industry's lowest-power SoC FPGA in its class.
September 2021Product LaunchWith the addition of an HLS design workflow called SmartHLS to its PolarFire FPGA family, Microchip Technology Inc. has significantly increased productivity and simplicity of design by enabling the direct translation of C++ algorithms into Register Transfer Level (RTL) code that is optimized for FPGAs.
October 2020AcquisitionTo add a high-level synthesis (HLS) tool to its edge compute solution stack based on Field-Programmable Gate Array (FPGA), Microchip Technology Inc. announced the acquisition of Toronto-based LegUp Computing Ltd.
